There are many notable styles that have evolved over the years and go through differing degrees of popularity according to the fashion of the time. Firstly though, we should look at the differing lengths involved with hairstyling. There are many classifications for length of hair starting with short hair. Short hair can be worn either completely shaved or bald, buzz cut which has different degrees but all are extremely short, cropped hair which is usually no more than an inch long and boys cut which is approximately 2 inches long. Medium length hair goes from ear length then to chin level and then what is known as flip level, where the hair comes to the neck or shoulders. Long hair can range from midback level, waist length, tailbone length and even floor length though that length is rarely seen in western society due to its difficulty to manage.
The range of styles in western culture is vast and varied. Most are dependent on length in their classification and here are some of the more well known styles. Bangs or fringes are used in many lengths of hair and involve cutting the hair to hang over the forehead. The Bob cut has lasted in popularity for many years and involves cutting all the hair to approximately chin length though there are some new variations on this such as the ‘Posh’ bob inspired by Victoria Beckham. Afro hair is worn by individuals of African descent and is allowed to grow so it bushes out like a halo around the head. Hair can be layered in style which involves top layers of hair being shorter than the layers underneath. |
