 It is rare in today's western fashion conscious culture that an individual would cut their ownhair or for that matter allow someone untrained to cut it for them. The development hence of the hair stylist has become a popular choice of career for many and if successful it can bring much fame and wealth to the lucky and talented few that make it big in the hair fashion industry.
Individuals can attend college to become trained and gain recognised certificates in hair styling but most often when they leave they start at the very bottom of the hair salon pecking order by simply washing hair. Once they have proved themselves they then become trainee's and junior stylists and work there way up to more senior positions or open salons of their own.
