Hairdressing in society has long been a sign of wealth and personal grooming. The art of hairdressing is the arrangement and modification of natural hair to the state the individual desires it to be. Aside from the obvious fact of necessity of hairdressing to simply keep hair under control and out of the way, it has always been a statement of personal style much in the way fashion has been throughout the ages. In the ancient world hair was worn simply by either cropping or having long and in a band, whereas the wealthier of society developed differing complex styles according to the fashion of the time.
There has also been a somewhat religious significance to hairstyling which can be seen around the world. Examples can be that of shaving the head in the case of Buddhist monks or covering the hair completely in the case of catholic nuns. Your hairstyle could also indicate your age and marital status in previous times such as in medieval Europe where maidens wore uncovered long hair and matrons wore their hair under veils.
By the time of the late middle ages it became a much more fashion related accessory with some extreme examples seen in France in 17th century where excessive wigs were worn by aristocrats that even contained birds in birdcages to eat the bugs that would infest the wigs! |
